Calling all Cycle Shopperholics!!

Following on from an unplanned and rather un ladylike dismount, which resulted in a cracked lid and concussion, I now require a replacement.

However, I’m a MTB’r (trail riding, including a bit of DH) and a roady (fitness and Sportives, limited to weekend riding now) and not having the budget just before Christmas to splash out on to two helmets, I was wondering if anyone could suggest any make/style etc that would do the job for both and look reasonably ok for both or would it make more sense to buy either a road helmet now or a MTB helmet now and get the other at a later date? hmmm not sure, I’m itching to get one sorted asap so I can get back on either bike when I’m feeling less sore, which hopefully will be at the weekend.

Any ideas, suggestions, links, recommendations….will be much appreciated guys.

Cheers :)

Don't know what your budget is but the POC Octal might fit your requirements

Style is a bit of a hybrid between Road and MTB

  • Agree with the above- I believe POC has or is releasing a helmet with a removeable face guard if you need a full face helmet for your downhilling.

Other than that there is the MET Crossover which has a removable visor to switch between road and off road use (although I don't see the need for visors off road anyway...) and I was using mine mostly on the road for a couple of years until accidentally leaving it on a train and go missing.

EDIT: Sorry, it was the Bell Super 2R I was thinking of- not POC at all, just looks similar!

Trouble is what suits one person may not be comfortable on your head. If you want a helmet that suits for both look for one with a removable visor. But saying that I use a helmet with a visor through the winter anyway as it helps keep the rain out of my eyes. I'd go to a shop and see what's comfortable and in your price bracket.

I use a Giro XAR MTB helmet with the visor removed on road and off. I like the fit of Giro hemlets with the Roc-Loc adjuster, however a bit like cycling shoes your really need to try them if you are switching brands as they all feel and fit differently.

Specialized Align helmets for me. Cheap, fit well, very comfy, don't look awful, has saved me from a nasty head injury in the past. Perfect.

Loads of helmets will do for road and MTB these days so do not see the issue.

Were you really concussed from a dismount?
What injuries do you think would have resulted if you did not have a helmet on?

Would have thought you would take protecting your head more seriously after that happening.
Sounds like you need at least 2 helmets if you do DH anyway.

Just buy another of the one you smashed. If it was good enough for all the types of riding you did before smashing it, whats changed?

Yes I was confused and had memory loss.

I dread to think, I'm fully aware of how worse things could have been if it was for not wearing head protection, being a horse rider and having taken many tumbles and knocks to the head over the years, including sat at the bedside of someone with a fractured skull, I take it very seriously indeed.

I was just asking for suggestions on a helmet that would be suitable for both at the moment because I can't afford to buy expensive helmets just now, but still quite prepared to spend on one decent one for the time being.

Have a look at the Bell Sequence, visor on for mtb and visor off for road. Looks fine for both and a nice comfy lid, if it fits!

First thing is find a shop and try a few on. Once you work out which ones fits you well which is the main thing you can then decide on looks. Then get the shop to price match the best price you can find. All helmets have meet the same safety standards. My mountain bike helmet was a fairly cheap one and my road helmet cost a bit more but due to price matching was about a third off.
