Winter jacket/jersey that's hi viz

Looking to pick up a jersey or jacket for evening rides that is fairly hi viz. Currently wearing a Castelli Gabba SS with arm warmers and its anything but hi viz. Temp will range from 11 down to 5 or so. Not sure would I get away with a thermal jersey and base layer or should I consider a jacket. Also want something fairly fitted like the gabba.

Anyone using something like this now and what would you recommend?

I have been looking at castelli, sportful, gore, dub but not sure what to consider

    Altura Night Vision Evo Jacket.

Very high vis. Even the zips on the pockets and the writing is reflective. I wear one over winter and its waterproof. Good quality with a mesh liner. Available in different colours if you're fed up with dayglo yellow.

The Altura Night Vision padded bib tights are also very awesome. Fleecy inside and warm, and some tasteful reflective pattern.

I have no idea if it's any good but the Capo Padrone looks pretty cool, I've got other Capo stuff and it's very high quality kit.

I can now say from experience... if you have a crash caused by wet leaves on a corner. The Altura Night Vision Jacket is indeed abrasion proof. No tears or holes, just looks a bit dirtier down one side. Didn't even crack my new phone screen (for a change).

Another +1 for the Capo. Their Lombardia jersey is the near equal of the Gabba - fit is similar too. So the Padrone looks a good bet.

I went for the dub roubaix windslam from wiggle.

As I'll only really be using it for night rides the cheap price was a no brainer....might leave me some more for something else!!

Exactly what autumn/early winter properties does the Airstream have then lol?

Gore Phantom would be a thousand times better.
It has the black/hi-viz colourway the right way around too

I already know. It doesn't have any.

OP wants it for winter anyway. So an item thats not that great for early winter is not going to help much.

Looks like Altura are lying then ??

Not lying, but where does that statement mention winter, temp. or wind?

Its just a slightly warm long sleeve jersey that (as Altura say) needs two other garments on those 'really cold days'.
It would be those other two layers that made the difference then, not the Airstream.

So you are saying the OP should put his Gabba in the drawer and get an Airstream
  • You mostly always need to layer up on really cold days anyway , it's just one of many options available as the OP wanted an idea for a jacket or a jersey . It has it's downfalls yes but you could use a Gillet over it as extra wind protection.

I also use a lot showers pass clothing have a look at their range OP excellent quality , customer service etc

Castelli Alpha Jersey (in lime) should see you down to 5 degrees with a base layer.

Below that the Alpha jacket, in lime.

Agree with the above that layers are the way to go - we don't have super cold winters in most of the UK and a standard long sleeve jersey, decent base layer and a gilet is generally enough and it's often nicer to have a bit less on the arms than the torso.

Of course you do then need a high viz gilet too.

Layering is fine, but not sure a standard long sleeve jersey is up to the job of being one of those layers, especially with a gillet.

I find a windproof jersey (Phantom is still my fave despite having others) with a hot pack 4 in one of the pockets for heavier showers works well.

I guess the next option is something like the Alpha, but have never found the need for that kind of stuff on the UK rides I do.

In the main I'd agree. Even early weekend rides do warm up. And, if they don't, should we be out?

My main reason is commuting. In the dark at 7 am it can often be -3 or so. And then they really help. Of course, this ignores my point above of should I be doing it?!

Me too. Or how about a bright/reflective gilet over the top (dropping a base layer if necessary)? If it's dark, something like the Assos emergency gilet thing

There's an ornage hi viz version of the Mavic H20 jacket - I have one and like it. They also do arm warmer & jersey in the same colour, or did last year anyway.

Assos 851 in piton (more hi viz than it looks on the link) works well for me at anything below 5degC

I've been buying and wearing Capo kit for a few years now and like you rate it highly. This Winter I've been back buying more including a Lombardia jacket and a jersey. Has you Lombardia severed you well? And do you find them a snug fit?
