Cable Ferrules

Got my bike back from Planet X after a warranty frame swap about a month ago (which took a month) and have just noticed something odd.

The new frame is an RT-57 which has internal cable routing. None of the outer cables (brakes or gears) have ferrules on the ends before they go into the frame.

Releasing the tension in the gear cables for example and having a look at the ends of the outers, they're not cut amazingly square and there is definitely space for ferrules.

I've never had a bike before with internal cable routing, but I can't see why it's any different from any other frame. The end of an outer needs a ferrule doesn't it?

    My Bianchi has them.
  • I thought ferrules were supposed to exclude water from getting into the outers and rusting the cable.
They could also protect the frame from getting scratched by the sharp end of the cable outer.

I guess you don't really need them for internally routed cables, but I would probably fit them if it wasn't too much faff to do so.
  • I'd say you need them just as much on this frame as any other I've had.

I might have explained badly before. All the cables are internally routed but there's only as much outer as on any other frame. Some internally routed mtbs for example have one piece or outer going all the way from the shifter or lever to the mech or brake.

On this frame, the only cable inside is inner. The outers end when the cable goes into the frame so it's just as prone to rusting or whatever as a "normal" setup.

Given they replaced my frame for free I don't want to complain but in my opinion that's a pretty half-arsed way to put the new one together.

  • Have just built up a Specialized Venge running Shimano and all the fitting instructions showed ferrules on all the cables entering the frame, in fact the Shimano supplied ferrules or cable ends had additional bits of fine tubing moulded onto them that 'guided' the cable into the frame.
  • Do people think it's being a pain in the arse to request new cables so I can do it properly myself then?
Properly sealed shimano cables aren't cheap.

Surely you just need some ferrules?

  • In my experience cables fray as soon as you take the nipple off the end. Before you take them out of the outers and try and put them back in...

You can superglue or solder the ends of the cables to prevent them fraying while still allowing them to be pulled back through the outers.
