Rattle from inside the clip on bars. Is it the cable outer touching the alu bars?
It came like this from new. How do I shut it up?

It could be that, or possibly something is inside the bars that shouldn't be there. Have you tried taking the shifter out and seeing what is inside?0

if you take the shifter off can you see down the tube?
sounds like its more that likely its the cable outer.
if you take the shifter off, masking tape around the outer part of the bar and bag the shifter, then lash some expanding foam down the tube.
don't be tempted to wipe it off before it goes hard. leave it a day to harden then you should be able to trim/clean off the excess easily.
might sort it outMy winter bike is exactly the same as my summer bike,,, but dirty...0 -
Expanding foam!?! Your 'avin a larf int ya? Thick Porage is much cheaper.
If it is the outer cable, could you use a rubber grommet? They come in all sizes so I am pretty sure youll find one and slide it down the cable and into the Tri bar.

Expanding foam will be lighter than porridge.
And to fit a grommet the OP willneed to take the whole cable out starting at the mech, so if they are going to do that they may aswell just cut the outer down inside the bar as i suspect that its too long hence causing the noise when the shifter is in place.
Of course i could be wrong on the cable having an outer as i have never taken a tri bar apart before. My winter bike is exactly the same as my summer bike,,, but dirty...0 -
^ You can put a split into the grommet. That's how we did it on mini throttle and choke cables through the bulkhead before we ate our porage.
I just wonder what potential mess the expanding foam will cause and will it keep it's integrity so that at some time in the future, re-assembly will be straight forward and cable can be re-inserted easily through the foam.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
was only an idea. if you leave it to go off its not actually that hard to remove, but as said to mask off everything first.
you could cut a grommet and do it that way, but there is the potential for it to come off again eventually unless you can glue it on, but might be tricky to do that if its needed halfway down the bar.My winter bike is exactly the same as my summer bike,,, but dirty...0 -
I have a feeling I know what it is.. something very simple.. had exactly the same
Mine was the inner tube valve vibrating against the rim when not using the little screw thingy0 -

Yes, to me it sounds exactly the same, but the wheel seems to be in contact with the ground. In my experience, the noise is louder when the wheel is off the ground and when wheel is touching the ground it's hard to make it sound that way by tapping on the bars.0 -

yeah you could be right, although I diagnosed my rattle when front wheel was on the floor as I thought it was the bars.. until I managed to follow the rattle to the wheel.. It didn't even cross my mind it could have been the valve. Makes sense now, as on rough ground it used to rattle like mad on rides!.. I use a little rubber o-ring and stuff half of it between the rim and valve now and stops it a treat.0 -

Thanks for the comments. Had the wheel off, it's not the valve. Guess i'll pull the shifter & have a look inside0
