XC wheels for about £300

Considering buying a second set of wheels to use for XC use only with about £300 to spend.
Would it make sense to go for a factory setup, or a custom set?
They need to be 26" and qr both front and back.
I had initially looked at the XT785 wheel set, but they seem to be out of stock, so have been looking at alternatives (mavic crossride/ crossroc WTS) or XT hubs on X717 or DR400 rims.
Which would you choose? Current setup is a set of Hope SP-XC3 which will be kept with semi slicks for road use.
The other alternative is to keep the current wheels for XC and buy a road bike for road use...

I'd also suggest the road bike. My Decathlon Triban 3 cost me £300 (plus another £100 for better tyres, pedals and saddle but that's personal stuff) and it's a million times better at being a road bike than any mountain bike would be. Also means you get another bike which can never be a bad thing surely.0
