Study into the effects of wine drinking for road cyclists

i cannot tell the difference between makes of tyres, stem lengths , tyre pressures and frame geometry.

However, I am an expert on the subject on which of Merlot, Cabernet or Roija has the most detrimental effect on performance.

In my early cycling days (last year) I stayed off the grape for several days before all important events. I am now of the opinion that one day of abstinence is sufficient to achieve 98% of the required result, and limiting myself to a half a bottle the day before I can achieve 95% on the optimum performance. Seems a reasonable trade off to me.

And, it looks like the NHS are going to give me free pills for my problem.

How good is that?

So alcohol is detrimental to performance, you say? You could be on to something...

    No, we all knew that.

I am just thrilled to discover that the upside outweighs the downside.

Bizarrely when I used to race I found that 2 glasses of a decent white the night before did wonders (serious).

3 messed my riding up, 2 improved.

    No idea at all why.

No! The half that is left is even more tempting then. You can drink a bit of it and still have enough left for the day after.

The biggest problem I got is finding a bottle cage the right size.

130k today. Final 20 slightly marred by torrential rain and howling wind. Silly thing is that I was only 5k from home when the rain started.

It's amazing what stupid things we do to qualify to buy an absurdly expensive Strava cycling Jersey that I know will make me look like a Cabernet Sauvignon Grape.

Hang on ! How cool is it to look like a fine wine?

To celebrate I felt it was appropriate to anticipate the arrival of the jersey moment and drink a bottle of the stuff.

Simple, get yourself a CamelBak Mule.....3 litres of wine on the move

Do they do a dual chamber version for when one fancies an espresso? I've often thought the one "hump" Camelbak is a misnomer, and should more correctly be called the Dromedarybak. So perhaps the "Cab' n Coffee" double hump Camelbak would not only correct this branding faux pas, but provide the average cyclist the essentials for the road? I'm assuming they will already have a saddle mounted humidor (so much more aero than the handlebar mounted versions).

Best part of a bottle of Alsace riesling and I did the Platzerwassel the next day without falling off, unlike some abstemious lightweights I could mention. Was that the study and effect you were looking for?

Short term, I had found a bit of red wine the night before a race can have a positive affect when racing ( not saying a bottle, merely a glass ) as it helps with cardiovascular systems and relaxation. As long as you burn off the empty calories I think it's ok ;)
  • I can report that 7 is the magic number for pints of Guinness.
  • I can report that a lack of wine helps with sleep. Felt much better today so might even risk a repeat of it tonight!

Not one of you has mentioned the size of your wine glass. If you can't split a bottle between two glasses, you're not doing it right...

And my performance on Legs of Steel the other week was severely hampered by the partying the night before. That's my excuse and I'm sticking with it...

I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.
