Ultegra 6800 Wheelset and 10 Speed Spacers!

Hello,

Picked up a set of Ultegra 6800 wheels online. Just wondering about the spacers needed for fitting a 10 speed cassette. Mixed messages regarding fitting the thin 1mm spacer as well as the 1.8mm spacer that comes with the wheels.

So, do I need to fit the thin spacer that Shimano 10 speed cassettes come with as well as the spacer that came with the wheels?

Thanks in advance!

  • Don't know why I doubted it! Shimano docs confirmed both spacers needed.
  • I just carried out the same job this afternoon, I also used both spacers on the inside but had to leave off the spacer between the smallest cog and the locknut.

Did you also leave off the spacer or have I missed something? I did have to adjust the end points on the rear derailleur.

I assume you were also fitting a 10sp cassette to an 11sp freehub?
you shouldn't need to adjust anything, the spacers give the same dimensions as a 10sp free hub, r u sure you weren't using a cassette with the 1mm spacer built in ie Tiagra and 10sp mtb cassettes and SRAM ?

I don't know any spacer that you could leave out.

I was fitting Ultegra 6700 cassette to Ultegra 6800 wheels. When I removed the cassette, there was a 1.85mm spacer between the lock nut and the first cog.

Just managed to find Shimano tech docs. The doc for the 6700 cassette shows a spacer between the lock ring and 11t cog. The doc for the 6800 does not show any spacer between the lock ring and the 11t cog.

Take it as gospel if you read it in a Shimano doc - the 6700 and 6800 should be setup however it says.

Wiggle the cassette with the 1.8mm spacer. If it wiggles use the other spacer in addition to the 1mm one.

I mean with the QR loosened, or no skewer in. Its the whole hub being wiggled really.

I'm telling you that's what I would do, not what I am suggesting you do, it might be wrong.

So thats the difference between 10/11 speed is it... 2.8mm? No, 1mm! No, 1.8mm! :P

The Tiagra 4600 cassette doesn't need a spacer, just the one supplied with the wheels, but the Ultegra 6700 cassette needs both.

Nice wheels although GP4000S tyres are a very tight fit!
  • Just retrieved the spacer that was fitted between the lock ring and the 11t cog and its inscribed that its for use with a 10 speed cassette on an 11speed wheel also just found other tech docs CS-6800 that shows a spacer between the lock ring and the 11t cog and another doc which shows both spacers together between the spoke mounting flange and the 25,23,21 cog.

I took the cassette off a shimano R21 wheel which seems to have already had the two spacers installed, 1mm on the inside and 1.85mm on the outside of the cassette.

There seems to be a few different installation diagrams. Do you think the original cassette was installed incorrectly?

I've got 10 speed Ultegra and Dura Ace cassettes on 11 speed wheels. Both have the 1.8mm 10 speed spacer, plus the 1mm spacer that comes with the cassette, plus all the cog spacers. It should all fit on ok.

I've also got a 105 cassette and that doesn't come with the 1mm spacer, instead it's already built into the back of the cassette instead of a recess and seperate spacer as per the Ultegra and DA.
  • Is your 1.85+1.0 spacers together on the inside of the largest cog or one on each side of the cassette?

Both on the inside. There is a recess in the rear of the Ultegra and DA cassettes for the supplied spacer to fit into. I've bought 2 bikes with 11 speed wheels and 10 speed groupsets, and both times they were setup with the 10 speed spacer (1.85mm) also on the inside.
  • That's great, thanks for your help

Flycop, the spacer you refer to in the tech docs is a paper thin metal "spacer" or washer, in practice its part of the lock ring, it doesn't just fall off! it helps to stop the lock ring from binding to the final sprocket ie the 11 or 12t cog.

It is NOT a 1.85mm spacer, if you had that fitted then it was incorrect.
starting at the freehub - fit the 1.85mm and 1mm spacers, then the 6700 cassette, then the lock ring.
  • Hi mambo80,
I think the 1.85mmm spacer was in the wrong place ! I'm glad I have things sorted out now.

    thanks for your help.
