I can feel a vibration through the top tube when I rotate the back wheel on the freewheel (and when the drivetrain is moving so, in both directions). Rear hub bearings gone?
If true, Ugo just won a point.
He said let's see if they last 5,000 miles lol, wheels like that have really tiny bearings that don't last, well my entire cycling "career" doesn't span that many miles! Since I got a bike computer in 2010 I have done about 3,000.
Decent rear hubs with bearings that last beyond 500 miles... cost a fortune right?
What about ceramic bearings? They can't even go lumpy can they? I can get a full set of 4 ceramics for about £17 - its just that I don't know which hub I should be getting to put them in or hell, maybe they could even slot straight into the hubs I have already but, when does that ever happen.
Those "Icon Race" hubs... can they be cracked open and new bearings put in? I'd love to have ceramic bearings but what a massive amount of work it is.

Sorry wrong!
Shimano 105 cup and cone or Miche Primato sealed bearings - are both cheap and unless something goes very very very far wrong will last many many thousands of miles.
PS If rear bearings are gone you will feel it best and isolate it if you pop the wheel off and spin it while holding the axle. What you describe could be that or maybe BB bearings so check with th wheel off the bike before doing anything else.0 -
Almost any bearing at any price point should last more than 500 miles.0

This isn't the weight of the valve every rotation, resonance and the natural frequency of the frame all combining is it?
Put a bike in a stand, wind up the rear wheel and you'll see the whole lot vibrate or pulse.
It's science.Ben

If I spin the back wheel it does spin for ages and its smooth. Today I couldn't replicate it with the bike the right way up. Upside down, it rumbles a little. If the back wheel spins for "ages" the bearings can't be going. :?: Well they can, but it wouldn't spin as freely as it does.
The Triban 3 rear hub bearings went in no time, well under 1,000 miles. Only when I took the wheel off to put on my new wheelset I noticed it. The headset was the same. You get what you pay for. I don't know how they did those at £300 with a CF fork even with cheap bearings.0 -
