Is my R/H Shifter FUBAR?

My R/H 105 shifter is jumping 2 or three clicks when changing from low gear (big cog) to high gear (small cog) occasionally. Is it time to replace the shifter or is there a fix?

No user maintainable parts inside sadly.

Twice (in 7 years) my 105 RH shifter has started doing less than perfect shifting, and on each occasion it was because the cable was starting to fray / snap inside the shifter. The second time it snapped completely.

You can check without undoing anything:

Shift all the way down to the largest sprocket, then without turning the pedals, but maintaining tension on the cable by pulling an exposed stretch, shift all the way up. The mech / chain should stay where it was on the big sprocket, and you'll have enough slack in the cable to be able to push the nipple end back out of the shifter for inspection.
  • Thanks guys, will double check the cable (although this is very new):-)
