First of my apologies if this is in the wrong section. (Mods feel free to move)
I am going to be doing Lejog next year and would like a GPS device with good maps. It will probably be used on other rides. It doesn't need to be all singing and dancing, good mapping is the priority everything else is a bonus
My question is about maps.
I am looking at a garmin 810 or may an 800 if I can find a significantly better price. I know there are open /free maps but I might buy a garmin as a bundle.
My big question is what is the difference between OS 1:5000 maps and City Navigator?
And which would you get and why?
Thank you.

The OS maps are the same as the OS Landranger paper maps. The City Navigator maps are the same as in Garmin's car sat nav devices.

For road riding the City Navigator maps are better. They have less information not related to roads on them so are easier to read, especially on the small screen of a Edge device.

It will most likely be cheaper to buy the Garmin without maps though and the free maps available are perfectly good.

+1 to the maps on talkytoaster (open source) perfectly good and better if you ride off road. The screen is pretty small so you really don't want very high res maps.

No problems with my 800 and open source maps, which I've used in France and the UK. Garmin's maps seem hard to justify at the price. There are great guides online for set up, dcrainmaker for the maps and scarlettfire for the 800 were the two I used. Without that advice I'd have struggled
