Advice needed for newbie on which bike

Hi All,
First of I have to say that despite spending many years riding the road, I know absolutely nothing about the mtb scene or, more importantly, the bikes. However I'm thinking about moving soon to an area with lots of forests, tracks and areas that seem good for off roading. Hence I'm thinking about buying a mtn bike. Allied to this is the fact that my employers have just started a cyclescheme whereby I have £1k to spend.
My initial uninformed perusal of whats on offer has led me to look at the On One parkwood
http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CBOOPWDEO/ ... ntain-bike
and the Vitus Sentier 275VR

can anyone comment on these and/or whether I should be looking at any others?
Many thanks for any help!

Both are excellent bikes - the Parkwood gaining a superior fork and the dropper post, the Vitus getting a nice upgrade to the drivetrain with the XT shifters which are as smooth as they get.
You won't go wrong with either, but personally I'd opt for the Parkwood, the fork really is a cut above anything at this price and coupled with quality kit elsewhere and stable geometry I think it is the better package.0 -
I'd go for the Parkwood too, but note On-one charge an additional fee of 10-12.5% on Cycle to Work scheme bikes. Still probably worth it, but it put me off a £1k road bike with them as I'd have to find £100 up front.0

thanks guys.
Just another quick question: how does this bike compare to the On One?

Another very good buy. The OnOne is better value wise, but again a sound choice.0
