I bought a used bike with a fox 100 rl fork, when I took it out on a trail the forks where banging whenever I went over large bumps. I read somewhere this is due to low suspension oil so decided to go about servicing them.

I took the forks apart wiped over everything and wiped everything clean with some clean towels, I then took off the air spring top cap and replaced the oil in that section. I also took off the damper and wiped it clean, but when I screwed the top back on the trigger felt tight but stilll turned.
I filled the forks with the correct amount of suspension fluid according to the fox website but when I came to screw the bottom nuts back on the damper side nut just span and span.

I cant reassemble my fork with that nut spinning what should I do?

  • Sounds like the thread has gone... overtightened at some point most probably.

Rethink - do the nuts screw into anything at all? If not, you probably need to ensure the damper shafts are fully extended. Otherwise your bolts wont reach when you come to putting it back togehter.
  • I didnt even think to check the threads, saying that I think the problem is that the damper is spinning to freely.
I made such a mess trying to get the fork back together, suspension oil everywhere :/

It will spin, nothing to stop it unless you stop it, with no air in the spring, compress the forks as you try and do it up, you only need a small amount of friction to get it started.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • No good, I unscrewed the damper at the top and tightened the bolts at the bottom this worked. Its way better doing it this way as I could just pour the 155ml of oil through the top then screw the top cap back on.
