Question about Shimano Tourney gears

I am a complete novice to anything bike related. I was given a mountain bike by a friend for my son. I had to remove the back wheel to mend a puncture. When removing it I undid a screw that linked the gears to the frame. There is an unusual washer/nut that fell off and I need to know if that should be between the frame and the the gear cogs or between the gears and the frame? I have included photos of the offending parts.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated as I am getting all kind of grief from my son - "Dad, you are completely useless!"

Thanks

Tim

I have just worked on one of these, and have lost that exact bit! It is called a claw plate/bracket nut and keeps the hanger in position and stops it rotating. You can fit the derailer without it, but can be hard to line up and is not recommended.

Thank you so much for your reply. I thought the screw went into the hole furthest at the back on the frame but the diagram shows it going through the open slot on the frame, is that how you attached yours?

    Thanks

The screw holds the plate to the back of the mech hanger part, that then slides into the frame in the slot the wheel axle goes into afterwards. Once the rear mech is in place you tighten the screw to hold it in place.
