That'll explain the carnage on Kingsway yesterday, I once saw a car on its roof on Lower Thames St & wondered how on earth they'd managed it in rush hour traffic.

Since it's a VW Scirocco, perhaps the wind blew it over?

My sister once turned right in front of an oncoming car, which was doing about 25mph and that flipped it over. Doesn't take much.

NEVER EVER go in a car with my sister driving - it is a truly scary experience and probably dangerous for your health.

Speaking as someone who - ahem - may have some relevant experience in this field...

You don't need that much speed to do this. What you need is to get the car off balance and then clip a kerb at the wrong angle/moment. That will flip the car onto its side very easily. From there, your chances are >50% of rolling onto the roof because of the shape of the side of the car (narrower across the roof than across the door sills).

A friend of mine was going around the roundabout where the A50 and A38 meet (Toyota factory) when a girl pulled out in front of him. He was only doing 40 (accident investigation confirmed) when he hit her and then the kerb. The car completely flipped over and left him back on the wheels again.

Every panel on the car was ruined, apart from the roof as he was airborne at the time and it was left untouched.

Yep, this happened right in front of me at about 10mph:



Nothing more than the curb around the traffic island.
