Blind spot

I don't know how many times I have removed pedals, must be hundreds now!
Why does it take me so long to work out in what direction to exert pressure on the spanner?
Must be spatial awareness of something,
These days I just google it, well not Google, Duckduckgo.com.
There must be some mnemonic for remembering which is clockwise and anti!

    Just remember "back off"

Whatever side you are on, turn the spanner to the back to take the pedal off.

I also get confused but remember that the drive side is on the right and has the right (i.e. normal) thread.

The spanner motion is circular so I don't find your method that helpful.

Exactly, which is why clockwise and anticlockwise is the best way to describe how to turn your spanner.

Have your wrench/spanner pointing forward and move it up and back. You need to say where the wrench is before you start moving it or any description could result in you tightening or loosening!

  • The right hand pedal work in the right sense (clockwise tightens). The opposite is opposite.

What makes it even more confusing is when the pedals need tightening from the allen bolt on the inside of the crank rather than the usual pedal spanner method on the outside as it then reverses the instructions. Glad it's not just me!

If you pull up and back from the front, as I suggested, it makes no difference whether you use the allen bolt or a spanner on the flat. Not at all confusing!

    Exactly. Rockets don't have pedals.
