Hey guys, My chain keep coming off the lowest pulley wheel, basically on any rough etrrain where it bounces a bit. I repalced the deurailler hangar but its still the same, it just bounces off then sits in the cage but not on the wheel. What else could the problem be for me to look at? the teeth arent worn on the pulley wheels either. I have a deore xt shadow plus mech... and this all started (i think, or i could be clutching at straws) when i turned the clutch ON, as it was off and id never touched it since buying the bike new 2 months ago.

cheers for any advice!

Does it happen with the clutch off now, or only on?

    1. As above
    2. Bent or otherwise damaged chain - back-pedal it slowly and check for kinks/twists.
    3. Bent or damaged jockey wheel tooth.
    4. Check the jockey wheel for play at the bearing/bushing - if it's too loose, it can flop over causing the chain to fall to one side.

It happens with clutch on or off. When back pedaling its all fine once the chain is set on everything, i cant see a stiff link anywhere. The jockey wheel teeth all seem fine and i dont think theres play.

No, didnt think i needed to as shifting is fine and chain doesnt come off the cassette, the b screw moves the mech right?

You need to read Parktools website. In Cooldad's signature above.
  • If your bike was ok its probably one of these four reasons
    1. The rear derailleur isnt adjusted correctly and you need to turn the high limit screw(the screw with a H next to it) clockwise.
    2. The gear cable has streched because youve been changed your gear and you need to turn a cable adjuster on the derailleur or on the hand shifter.
    3. The chain has a pin which it too tight and just isnt bending as it goes over the smallest cog(Highest gear).
    4. The chain has a link that is really bent out of shape and needs to be bent back into shape or replaced with a very low priced one off ebay.

I bought a bike recently and got a dirt cheap kmc x9 chain off of ebay with sram link for about 1/2 the price they are on chainreaction let alone high street prices. Now when I need to adjust the derailleur or sort out my rear gears I can adjust the derailleur tons quicker than with the chain on.
