City Riding

I live in what is a very rural area and most of my riding is on country roads with light traffic etc.

Yesterday I had to return a hire van to the west side of Edinburgh so I decided to take my bike and cycle back. It was Sunday afternoon so the traffic was not too bad and I chose a route to minimise busy roads and avoid dual carriageway (From Corstorphine I went to Haymarket up to Tollcross, past the Meadows, through the park and down towards Portobello then out through Musselburgh for those who know it).

Whilst the traffic was light the number of red lights was ridiculous - way more obvious than when I drive. I must have been stopped by more than 10 red lights, many of which were aimed at pedestrians and no-one was crossing.

Whilst I don't condone cyclists jumping red lights I can now see why they me tempted to do so. What a right royal PItA. I am so glad I don't commute by bike.

  • Look at it this way: it gives you a chance for an epic sprint away on green!
  • If its safe I cross on the red light if its green for pedestrians cause if we lived in a civilised country with any real commitment to ecology that green for pedestrians would be for a cycle lane as well!

Not for me yesterday. I just couldn't get clipped in quickly. I'd had 3 weeks off the bike and the previois two weeks I'd been cycling my other bike with slightly different pedals (Keo Blades vs Keo Classics) and the spun differently.
