Hi,
My brother has been riding my old Specialised Rockhopper, for a few years now, which I had for a few years before that, so it must be a 2008/2009. He's still got the standard setup. He's doing a lot more biking, riding several times a week, doing Viking Challenges etc on Sundays (did the 50K in 2:30 last Sunday). He has come on a long way. He mainly rides cross country and trail, but not descents etc, just what you would see on a Viking Challenge of BHF Ride.
I've spoken with him about the type of bike he want's which is a hardtail, and he is keen on the 650b/27.5 rather than a 29er. He does do some forest biking occasionally and wants some maneuverability.
So a 27.5/650b hard tail.
I've looked at a few options for him including the Vitus Sentier 275 VR, which won best Hardtail 2014 for under £1,000.

I may also be able to get a deal on a KTM Ultra 1964 Ltd Edition.

I wondered if there were others you would suggest for serious consideration, as I'm not up to date on bikes e.g. Boardman, Radon etc.
Thanks,
Steve

Shame he said no to a 29er as a Voodoo Bizango as it would seem to really hit the spot you've given us.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Sounds like a cyclocross bike would be more suitable.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350
