Any one had an Equilibrium frame...... Thinking of building a winter bike from one

I used the aether, which was the alu. version which is no loger made, and its great. Good geometry for bad conditions (confidence inspiring / steady) and comfortable. Good clearances & takes full guards. [Currently selling it (54cm) on a popular on line auction site!] Equilibrium gets very good reviews - quite a popular choice. The disc version(s) interests me for wet weather use. I'd also look at Kinesis unless you are set on a steel bike.'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0

Built up a 2012 frame earlier this year. This dates from before the introduction of the carbon forks. Build details are here:-

Really delighted with the results. Rides as well as, if not better than, my previous alloy (Forme Longcliffe) and carbon (2002 Trek 5200 carbon) builds.
I can imagine that the newer frames with carbon forks would be a further improvement.
Just go for it - you won't be disappointed. You might even decide to ride it year round as I do0 -
Sorry to high jack this thread, but I think it's relevant. Does anyone know the frame weight of the Equilibrium Disc 725?
I can see the TI listed as 1.57kg here but it would be nice to know the weight of the steel 725 to figure out if the extra cost is worth it in weight.
Also, they've changed to 725 from 631 for the steel equilibrium for 2015, does anyone know how this will effect ride and weight?0 -

Not sure where you got this fact from. As far as I'm aware the steel Equilibriums have been Reynolds 725 from at least 2012 if not before.

I got it from this Bike Radar review of the 2014 model.
It also says 631 here on the Genesis website for the 2014 bike.
I think the frame you are linking to is the rim brake version, which looking at the Genesis website seems to have been 725 for last year at least.
So, why would they change from 631 for the disc model last year to 725 for this year? I'm guess that 631 might have been a nicer tubeset, but with the rest being in 725 it's cheaper just to buy more of that.0 -
I ran a second hand Aether as my winter bike last year. 28mm tyres, full guards and Campagnolo Veloce. It was a solid winter bike. I’ve now upgraded to an Equilibrium 20 for this winter with the intention of using it for LEJOG next year. Going to start this build this weekend…0

Head over to Commuting chat. There's a thread dedicated to the Equilibrium.0

I have one, its great. The handling is not as sharp as my race bike due to the longer wheel base.0

I have a 60cm Ti disc frame and it is 1.67kg.
The old 631 disc frame is well over 2kg + 1kg fork. The new 725 frame has not reached the dealers yet. The 725 tubing is a bit lighter. I think the frame will be around 2.1kg for a 56cm frame and around 0.75kg for the forks.
As for ride quality difference it would mean some one test the two frames with the same kit and tyres on the same roads back to back, that never happened. Is suepct ride quality will be uneffected.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0 -
Thanks for comments ..... I have now bought and built my new 2015 Equilibrium and its great, very nice to ride. My first ride was some 50 miles and found the ride compliant and forgiving on rough roads. Its fully kitted out with mudguards and all the necessary winter stuff ( Think I might become a steel fan ! )
I would recommend this bike to anyone, only down side, its a little heavy coming in at about 10 kgs.0 -
bought the 2014 frame a while ago and have been upgrading my Carbon bike and then transferring the parts over onto the Equilibrium, finally it is almost ready to go. Really satisfying to have put it all together and although used parts it is looking good, just need some new bar tape nowJamis Xenith Endura Sport 2012

I've got a 2014 frameset in the cherry red colour which looks very nice. In a 54 built with 5600 groupset, thomson post and stem, hope/open pro wheelset with gp4000s, arione saddle, deda Newton bars, and 105 pedals it's pretty much exactly 20lbs including bottle cages, lights and computer mount. With guards fitted it's up to 21 lbs. As mentioned above it soaks up rough roads very well and handles nicely but it's not got the flicky, think about it and you're already there handling of a race bike. It's not supposed to be that kind of ride though (wheelbase/head angle) so fair enough, and that probably helps make it safer on winter roads where you need to choose your line a bit more carefully anyway. Great for rolling out some off season miles on crappy roads in crappy weather, which is why I got it, so happy with mine0
