Yay!

It's a remarketing ad so unless you have visited my website you won't see them I doubt unless BR is one of Google's Display network partners.

Certain browsers and accounts track your web usage, and if you have visited sites of a specific nature they show you ads related to them. Also, if you have visited a specific site they show you ads related to that side.

That's right. On my site I have only had it set up for a few days so that's why I am excited to see it. Anyone who has looked at a product on my site then sees my ads for a period of time to remind them of the website. So, in essence that's why you appear to get followed around these days by things you have looked at at places like John Lewis or Halfords or wherever.

So, I then pay Google every time someone clicks on it, something in the order of 50p.

I looked at your website but get nothing from Google but that's probably because the debacle that is advertising on here forced me to install ad-blocker

I hate to burst your bubble but I don't think it was being specific to you, when I was having a nose about I got the same message

This reflects entirely on how stupid I am.
I think it's cool that Joelsim gets all this, but its annoying and intrusive when other places do it.

Advertising is my background and I agree with you on ads that are intrusive, truly hate it. The problem is the response rates on banner ads are typically less than 1% click through so advertisers think that being intrusive will help, albeit it gets really annoying with pop-ups and expandable ads etc.

Trying loads of things at the moment, have spent £100 on Google today for no return whatsoever except loads of people browsing my site. Won't be doing that again!

The thing with massively intrusive sites, is that you click them by accident, so the advertiser pays the website, but usually people close it immediately.

Joel, Audio Technica is the real deal for the price, isn't it. I'll have to buy a set some time soon.

Audio-Technica are a great brand, yes. Others in the same arena are Beyerdynamic, Musical Fidelity and Klipsch. Also coming soon to MTYE is Grado which is also excellent.

Other good brands are AIAIAI and Sennheiser.

All of the above are about 20 cuts above expensive, 'style' headphones like Beats by Dre, where the 'b' stands for 'bellend' for paying through the nose for very average-sounding models and contributing to the marketing genius free ones they have given to all prominent footballers.

Get in touch when you are ready and I'll do you a deal obviously.

'Scuse my ignorance but isn't it a good thing if people are browsing your site? Surely there's a 'raising awareness' element to advertising? The benefit could be felt later couldn't it?

Do you need to pay google 50p if you click the ad yourself?
  • joelsim
    joelsim Posts: 7,552
Yeah. You basically put a max bid in and then Google holds auctions for space and the highest bidder wins. In effect this means that if you have a low bid your ad won't be shown. A higher bid means more clicks and more impressions. I did a test yesterday on some display marketing, put my bid up to £2 rather than 20p that it was on. It went bananas and I spent over £100 in an hour. Needless to say it was paused very quickly as that isn't sustainable at all.

Yes there is of course. Hopefully it isn't money wasted, but it's a bit worrying when you go from having one or two people browsing to 20-40 immediately and you see your spend go absolutely mad. But at the average 54p per click that becomes very expensive indeed for people just having a browse and often not getting past the homepage.
