Looking to replace my trusty Giant Terrago trail (2007) via Ride2Work so i must purchase from Evans Cycles.

The Terrago had new forks Rockshox Silver and new breaks Forumlas.

The rides i do aren't too extreme more XC, which is the better option, I'm only 5ft 6" so the medium might be too big.

Or

Any others to consider under £1000 at Evans?

  • Have you tried those two out - they are both 29ers which may or may not suit a shorter gentleman. I am 5'6 like you and personally prefer to stick to the smaller wheel sizes. GT Zaskar 650B Elite and Saracen Zen would be the two I'd have a sit on for decently kitted out bikes - the Zaskar being a nice little xc/trail bike, the Zen a little more gnar.

I ride a medium Santa Cruz and a small Cove hardtail and vary between small and medium in sizing on most other bikes.

If you do want 29" wheels the best 'bang for buck' I can find in your frame size is this BMC

    Doesn't have to be 29"

    http://www.evanscycles.com/products/pin ... e-ec055210 Reba, XT and SLX.

Wipes the floor with the suggested bang for the buck BMC - which is poor value to be honest even at the reduced price - and is available in sm and me sizes.

I think the Evans website works a little funny in Canada as neither of those bikes were visible to me!

Not sure 'wipes the floor' is entirely accurate. Couple of bits XT instead of deore. Reba forks only 80mm in small frame size. Being a sale special BMC is now £850. Pinnacle do know how to make a bike fugly though!

Sorry, it's no contest really.... The BMC may be on sale, but an Recon has no place at all on a genuine £1500 bike.

OK managed to order new bike on new Evans store opening deal - 10% off retail price and then on Ride2Work works out at about £460.00

Went for the Norco Charger 7.1 2015 model
    http://www.evanscycles.com/products/nor ... 5#features.

So far £50 deposit, unfortunately I've just come back from USA with 2 broken toes from football so there will be a delay in collecting it.

I will did a side by side weigh in with my existing Giant Terrago trail and it's considerably lighter. Is his a good deal? The top bar shape is ideal for my short tight as it gives me some top bar clearance. Was the Pinnacle or any others in this price range from Evans considerably better??

I won't make comparisons as you've already opted for it, except that if you genuinely pay £460 for it (12 months plus final payment) that's a good deal, it's broadly similar in spec to the Rockrider 8.1 which costs £550.

If you are after a circa £500 bike, then that is good value, obviously the more you spend the better the bike, but it will do your stated usage just fine.

I'm 5'9" and fall between a small and a medium, for anything offroad a medium will almost certainly be too big for you.

I currently ride a 17" and was measured up for the original bike professionally. It's only my inside leg that's quite short.

do you not think the Norco is,worth the full £800?

No, for £800 there are better bikes, it's similar in spec to the £550 Rockrider 8.1, for £250 more it wouldn't be good value.

What's a far superior bike from Evans then for £800?

    What about this Trek?

Are 29ers best avoided for trails and XCountry?

Forks and chainset are much better on the Pinnacle. None of these are bad though.

I think what you need to do is ride a few of them though - because spec is only part of the story - the geometry of some of these bikes may suit you better than others and this is really important.

Are the Norco and Pinnacle considerable upgrades? How much do you think my current bike is worth?
  • Did you go for the Pinnacle Ramin in 4 then?

I'm in the same position as you, £1k to spend on a cycle to work scheme.

I've been looking at the Pinnacle, Saracen Mantra Trail and Scott Aspect 910. I like the look of the Pinnacle, but my mate's say I'm mad!

No still waiting on my toes to mend, might try the both at the weekend. Anyone got an idea about how much my old bike is worth, shown above in previous posts?
