  • I have the Volvo S60 with the 5 pot 163 horse motor. Quick enough for anything on public roads, even fully loaded and still £30 a year VED and early 50's to the gallon.

It's my first Volvo but would highly recommend them as it's been brilliant and will definately consider another when I replace it next year.

Really like the new Leons. The base models look a little bland (normal I guess) but that for example is very nice.

Thought that was a BMW :(:(:( fail.

I wondered why you started talking about BMW's...

Not bad for the poor Spanish arm of the VAG. My mate has a 2013 A4 Avant and he much prefers mine. So do I :D

At least they have a proper handbrake unlike modern A4s...

    Good cars.

And regarding the advertising they are putting money into cycling which can only be a good thing.

Saw a Volvo S60 today, looked smart for a car that was 13 years old. Better than my rusty (and younger) merc.

The drive here is fine. Nice sharp contrast of slab / gravel.

The parking on the other hand, looks a little slap dash! Neither on, nor off.

That was purposefully done so that I had enough room between the car and fence to clean/detail the car which I did shortly before taking that photograph. I promise my parking is usually more 'on' :D

I assumed you'd just left more room for the hedgehogs fence licking frenzy later that evening.

So I'm off to the car auction today.

There's various sales Lex etc but one is UKCGR - this seems to sell all the stuff that's bought by WeBuyAnyCar - so they've got to make a margin, the auction make a margin and then all dealers make another margin when these cars go back on sale again...

FIL has a Skoda Superb estate, which is frankly MASSIVE - and that's coming from someone with a Seat Alhambra in his household! (PS: if it's size and capacity to take stuff that you want, check out a new Alhambra...)

It's a lovely car, no doubt - but do you REALLY need something that huge most of the time? It really is gargantuan!

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Well to report back I have bought a Volvo XC60.

There was a nice Skoda Superb in black, 61 plate, with 87,000 on - which was in very clean condition - I didn't see what it went for unfortunately as I had to stump up the deposit on my purchase.

I saw a Passat, nice one with high miles 114k go for £8k + fees that was also a 61 plate and a 2.0l version or some sort looked a bit sporty with nice alloys.

In terms of Volvo's I bought the one I thought best suited with towbar etc. In black I thought it looked smart. One two years younger a 12 plate with 60k miles went for just £13,600 + fees - I thought that was a bargain - had full leather R-design interior...

Good choice on the XC60, I had an R design D4 from work for a few weeks which was really nice.

It's amusing to me as a former Car subscriber that I had to look up what an XC60 looks like...

Yes, there doesn't seem to be loads about.

I think it is a good compromise in some ways for a big old bus. As a Volvo it doesn't project that *uck off out of my way image that I feel is given off from BMW, Audi, Mercedes Benz etc and is of course cheaper than those...

Also it has a little DrivE badge on the back which again projects a more cuddly image. I am just wondering in reality what the mpg will be like. I hoping its going to be good.

It's also smaller than most estates so it seems a bit of a compromise based on your original wish list. Seating for 5 is ok, not great and the boot capacity is less than the Passat or Superb. But hey, it's your choice.

I like the look of that Leon. I'd been looking at VAG group cars as my next one may have to come from them and was deciding between a Passat estate, Superb estate or Octavia estate as well as the Yeti and Tiguan as I like the SUV driving position but had forgotten all about Seat!

One of the guys here has just got a Leon ST and it's excellent. The design of the raising/lowering boot floor, the ability to fold the front seat completely flat (like an MPV back seat) means that you can have a totally flat load bed. There is little rear suspension intrusion so the load capacity is excellent. Perfect for us bikey/boarder types.

Having been through the whole MPV/4x4/estate thing over the last 15 years I have to say that it's one of the more impressively designed interiors (up there with the stow and go Voyager seats, which would be great if they weren't in a shit car!)

So how can you drive it... :) or is this just like when using as a cupboard.

I have been looking at the Superb and Passat estates myself,as my trusty old VW T4 has seen better days, and i am refusing on pay the over the top price "scene tax" for a newer T5,i know i will miss the size and the handiness of a van when it is gone
