Right, wanting to go to a 1x10 setup on my Mega AM but need some advice. Currently running 2x10 with 22t & 36t up front and a 11-36t cassette. Find myself using a 22(f)-32(r) ratio on some steep climbs and 36-17 on decents on my local routes (don't mind having to work harder if needed to go 1x10). Wondering what will be the best chain ring size up front for me and what type, can anybody point me in the right direction? Already running a clutch mech, system is SRAM/Truvativ if that makes any difference?
Cheers all.

You can't match 22:32 with a 1x10 easily, the smallest chainwheel you can get is a 30t, even with a 40t cassette expander that won't match the 22:32.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • If you go too small with the chainring you will be spinning out on the flat and descents.
You will soon find that higher gears for climbing arent as bad as you think. You just need to be determined and get up them quickly.
I use a 34t with a 11t-40t cassette and can get up just about any hill I ever could with a granny ring.
  • Thanks for the replies, didn't think I'd get the 22-32 setup but like I said dont mind working a bit harder. Might go for a 32 up front and see how I get on, if it's too much on the climbs I'll try a 30.
    Thanks all.

  • Change of plan, chickened out and now going to order the 30t  Looking at the ratios (thanks Wilberforce) I should be ok on the decents with 30t - 11t.
