(Temporary) Non-existent brake

The brakes in question are Shimano 596s

I put my bike in the boot of the car the other day - wheels on, but laid down on the floor - and after the ride it stayed there for about a day. When I got it out I tried the brakes and the front one went straight to the bar as if there were nothing connected to it. A few more pumps on the lever and it seemed fine, and the braking still seems fine, but

(a) Is this normal behaviour for a hydraulic brake?
(b) Could being laid down for a time explain it all?
(c) Should I just carry on and not worry about it?

The brakes are superb in every other way, even after this experience.

    Yes,
With the Shimano reservoir you can get small amounts of air trapped in the master cylinder when bleeding it, if you leave the bike at the wrong angle (like laid on its right side for the front brake, left side for rear, upside down for both sides) this can get into the working circuit, put it upright for a while and agitate by pumping the brakes and it comes out the working circuit and all will be fine with life again!
