What is better old ultegra components (8-10 years old) or new tiagra components?

Comments

  • I cant comment on old ultegra but new tiagra shifts as well as any of the top groups when set up properly.

Personally i would go for new tiagra over something 8/10 years old
    Cannondale Caad8
    Canyon Aeroad 8.0

I'd probably opt for new Tiagra.
If it was last Ultegra (6700) then I'd probably go for that but any earlier version I'd probably stick with 10 speed Tiagra.
It seems to me that the way Shimano do their trickle down through the range means the Dura-Ace gets updated with new features first. Then in subsequent years Ultegra, 105 and Tiagra get brought in line with those features but with a a weight penalty and a little less refinement, but generally they function comparably. Then Dura-Ace gets another revision and the cycle repeats (Is it a 4 year cycle? Not sure)
  • It's not always 4 years. See the table here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shimano, 4, 5 or 6 years seems the most common.

Groupsets wear out. Depending on mileage of course but I'd be tempted to go new in this particularly case.
