Edge 800 'Night' display

Until today, I've always assumed that the Edge 800 switches from 'day mode' to 'night mode' at sunset. That is, from the black text on pale background, to white text on black.

However, as far as I can tell, today's sunset in London was at about 7:01pm (+/- about a minute depending on whether east or west London).

My Edge 800 didn't switch till 7:07.

I would have thought that a GPS device could in principle know pretty accurately when sunset is, assuming it knows what the time is, and where it is. Mine is certainly showing the right time, and its location is bang on most of the time.

So, why the discrepancy? Anyone know?

The unit likely uses a different location as a reference than the one used for the sunset time you read.

The GPS will only use one point for the South of England.

  • Could it be using a sensor on the unit itself to gauge what the light in its surroundings are. Not got mine close-by to test but I'm sure that in a dimly lit area, it changes to night text mode?
