Hi all.

I'm looking to buy my first proper winter jacket. What are your experiences with a hard shell for all day wearing? Do they breath we'll enough for example. Or would I best with a winter jersey and good waterproof?

I was looking at Rapha jackets, only because with a discount I can get through work they come to the same price as other brands.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.

  • softshell jacket with a very thin waterproof in jersey pocket for torrential downpours.
  • I'm coming to terms with these issues later this winter. I've ordered some thermal jerseys and bibs, but hoping to be able to still use the waterproof hard shell I have.

Check out the Aldi bike jackets and kit out next Thursday. For the cost of one Rapha jacket - you could get a jacket, cape, gilet, jerseys and lots of other useful kit.

A jacket is good when its cold - but that's going to be a while.

I've assos, rapha and aldi kit - and I'd not pay the premium for the name.
  • The Rapha Hard Shell is the only product of theirs I've sent back. It's OTT for almost all conditions, you can't stow it, and I think that there are some issues with both the design and cut.

As other people have mentioned you'd be better off with a packable waterproof and also a softshell, and a good choice of other layers. It's far more likely it'll be either cold or wet, rather than both.
