At last - the tyranny is over.....

The tyranny that is white bar tape (because it's pro).......

Well it no longer is. The horror of white bar tape was almost entirely absent from the Tour of Britain and I think much rarer on the Vuelta than in times past. Who knows why? Maybe the Pro Teams gained a conscience or maybe the bar tape bill simply got too much even for them but, whatever, the era of white bar tape must surely be over.......

See, none of this lot need it - not even Cav....

Julien Vermote didn't need it to win the stage.

Van Baarle won the whole Tour with black tape!

Barely a spec of white on Ignatas Konovalovas unless you count the stickers on his wheels.

OK, Marcin Biabolocki used white tape but he finished 33rd! Who knows how much better he'd have done if only his tape had been black....

Would Kwiatkowski have been looking so cool with white tape?

Even Kittel is looking relaxed on Ditchling Beacon. Black tape does that for you. (We won't say anything about celeste bar tape but the important thing is, it isn't white....)

You have to match socks and tape, like collar and cuffs.
  • I've got blue to match the blue on my frame. I'm not too worried, it gets dirty, but I don't mind it that much.

    What tyranny?
I've never used white in 40 Years of cycling....
  • I've got the silver deda carbon look tape on my silver defy , looks bloody good. I've never had white bar tape either just don't like it .
  • Not a fan of white tape as it looks good from new and just horrible after a few rides.

Now tend to only use black, might be a little boring but it looks good pretty much all the time.
Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.
  • White shoes are still a thing though.

Some great piccies there Rolf. I quite like coloured tape myself (red on one bike and I have just put some purple tape on my wife's bike). Not sure that would make me the fastest in the peleton but I would look very dapper as I pinged out the back...

Rolf - why didn't you just post a thread titled: 'My pictures of the ToB'...?

Konovalovas is saying "If that tw@t wth the camera gets any closer, i'll deck him".
    seanoconn - gruagach craic!
  • I generally get a season out of my white bar tape on one of my bikes before it looks remotely grubby. Depends which tape you buy of course.

I rarely ride without mitts too though which also helps...

That bar tape is really slowing you down though, you should get rid of it.

Lol! Honest guv, I was actually genuinely more interested in the sudden absence of white tape. Last year, black tape really was a rarity - now white tape is a rarity. Something mysterious has happened. We should be told........

As for Konovalovas - silly bugger could have moved to the left a bit - we gave him at least four feet! (I'm really pleased with that pic - I didn't want to watch the stage via the view finder on the camera so I just set it to shoot 2 pictures per second and pointed it in what I hoped was the right direction when the riders came past - I didn't even know I'd got my finger on the shutter as he came past! That one and the Vermote shot are probably my favourites - the latter either as is or cropped; he really has an 'I'm getting the stage today and here is where it is going to happen' expression!).

As long as your saddle is black. BBB cheap synthetic cork tape £7 is very good so if you stay on white its hardly going to break the bank changing on a regular basis. doktor power cleaner is very good at restoring white and only takes a couple of minutes.....I don't work for Doktor power!
  • Rolf, its of course a diabolical international conspiracy by the tape manufacturers. After getting everyone to buy in to the "White Tape is so Pro" meme, they are now switching gears and subliminally urging us to spend on the "So Pro Black Tape", must have, plot...
Lets just got for a ride, the heck with all this stuff...

Rolf, the real tyranny is Spesh using Celeste.

Is it in homage to Senor Edoardo?

No no no. You need yellow tape on a blue bike.

Noooo, I don't believe that. I got nearly 20,000 miles out of a roll of black cork. I don't think anyone would ever claim they'd got more than about a 10th of that out of the white stuff without it looking at least a bit second hand. Black stuff just lasts for too long. It must be more mysterious and cunning than this........

IMHO it should be one of 'the rules' that tape is always black and should always have a flying C embossed on it

That's just plain snobbery that is. What's wrong with Benotto?

Do people still use that thin, shiny tape? Used to be the thing in the 60's and 70's, but now? :?

Surely there can't really be snobbery about cork tape! Anyway, the best cork tape has nothing embossed on it.
