priority: frame versus wheels & groupset?

Earlier, I posted a question about medium-range frames. But recently, I read about blank chinese carbon frames (not the fake-branded ones). It could save me up to € 1000 on the frame and fork itself which give me room to get better wheels, groupset etc. I am not planning to race the bike, it is just for personal use.

For about € 2500:
- a blank frame with ultegra and fulcrum zero
- a de rosa r838 / legend 4.7 (or similar) with tiagra an fulcrum r7

Which option would you choose?

  • Honestly - somewhere in the middle. Spend a grand on a great frame and finish it with 5800 and some mid-range wheels that you can upgrade if you want.
  • For 2.5k I'd get a bike in the sale with a name and ultegra and a set of Fulcrum Zeros for sunny days. I would not build a bike with Tiagra when an Ultegra groupset can be had so cheaply at the moment.

eg - Focus Cayo Evo 2.0 - frame has been ridden in pro tour, 11 speed ultegra, £1500 if you look around. Fulcrum Zeros about what - £650 ?

    2014 AR4 in the sales.

There's loads of bikes in your budget that are better than that de rosa.

The unbranded frame could be an option but I could never love it.

    EDIT:2014 not 2013.
