I am thinking of buying an MTB for myself for winter commuting and some weekend fun rides. I currently ride regularly on road. I also commute abut 70 miles a weeks in winter on country lanes, East sussex. So plenty of potholes full of water in the dark. Up to now I have used my 25 year old road bike as a winte hack, but the wheels and drive train are now on their last legs. I doubt I will get more than a month or so from it this winter. Plus the brakes are, in truth, uselesss in the cold and wet.
So, back to the MTB. I am restricted as I am using our cycle to work scheme to buy it. That means Halfords, or UK Cycles. Three I have in mind are the Boardman Team hardtail 29r. At Halfords, £849. Or there is a Specialized expert 2015, 29r at £850, UK Cycles. And finally A Cube Acid, £800, also at UK Cycles.
Anyone got opinions on any of them? For the money the Boardman looks to have the best kit fitted. But willing to learn from the experts. I have never owned an MTB.

Well, if it's this one your talking about... then yeah, it still gets my vote. I don't own one. It's just the best of a decent bunch.

A recon silver doesn't have a place on a bike at that price, I'd suggest the Voodoo Bizango, better fork than the cube and less money by a long way.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Agree on the Voodoo Bazinger, trouble is Halfords do not seem to have any stock left. And I am restricted to where I buy as I said.0

I assume halfords is one of the places you can buy from, in which case I'd speak to them about the bizango, showing stock locally for me as I was looking at buying one earlier this week.0
