Front light as good as the smart lunar 1 watt rear

Hi there,

i've been caught out a couple of times recently without a front light. I've bought numerous ones that use CR2032 batteries and they're great at first, but I find that even if they don't get used much when it comes to using it, the battery is dead. I also have the high powered separate battery lights which are great on a country lane, but not what I need for getting back from town.

I've had the Smart 1 watt and 1/2 watt lights http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/smart-lunar-r1-1-watt-rear-light/rp-prod56546 like these for ages and for example I turned it on yesterday for the first time in 6 months and it's great.

What i'm looking for is basically exactly that light for the front. So, a small, light, bright and using AAA bateries front light.

Any suggestions?

  • I'm currently using Lezyne Zecto Drive front and rear as back-ups for commuting and on the fixed (don't like having fittings on that). Pretty good and may be close to what you're looking for. Rechargeable rather than battery, though.

We've also got a few sets of Lezyne Femtos and Cateye 110 loops kicking around that get used by whoever picks them up, for shopping, school, nursery, winter running, etc. Also class them really as back-ups.

    These are nice little torches:

Will need a mount, but are tough, bright and adjustable. And cheap.

I got a knog boomer a couple of weeks ago and really like it, it is small, light (in every sense of the word!!) and doesnt require a bracket to be attached to the bike.

A couple of times its been almost completely dark on unlit roads and i could still just about see where i was going, I wouldnt recommend it for unlit roads but works fine if you are caught out without a stronger light.

If you are near a tk maxx i got just the front light for a tenner from there which seems a good price.

I think the USB rechargeable ones are the best bet now, as I don't use them regularly.

I've got some super powered ones that are great for night riding, however in town all i need is a small light that i can take on and off super easily as and when required.

I've actually got a similiar knog light and the problem i have with it (and another similiar light) is that the batteries seem to die when they're sitting in a draw not doing anything. And when i grab them to go out, they're useless. Not really a problem if you're using it for commuting regularly, but mines more for occasionally when I get stuck.

I think I'm going to go with one of the lifeline rechargeables and see how they go.

    thanks for the comments :)

They're tiny, not much bigger than the battery!
