Hi all ,

these -

Ive e-mailed sram and they said they do not do an 11 speed for these wheels?

Im no expert but have been lookin at the zipp 11 conversion free hub and it looks to the same as mine only 11 speed ?
Heres some pics of my 10 speed and the zipp 11 speed.

And heres the zipp one -

And a link to one for sale on ebay with some description -

Having read some descriptions on both , (which is a little technical for an novice like me), im pretty sure they both use 17mm axles
So i was wondering is there any chance that these are compatible ?
Id really like to keep my wheels but cant use them with my current 11 speed groupset.

  • Possibly, but to be honest freehubs look all very similar... given the cost of a conversion kit I wouldn't risk it... you can always get a Campagnolo freehub if there is such a thing and run a Campagnolo 11 cassette...

  • Hi ,Yeah , thanks im aware theres currently a campag freehub available (again if it fits), just that i already have my shimano 11 speed cassette ready to go .
I know the price of these hubs is high , but its also more of a point , and knowledge to know if these will work, some manufacturers make parts for others etc, with different company names attached & its a bit annoying that sometimes they wont say that things are compatible or not in order for us to fork out more dosh on what they want us to buy.
When i e-mailed sram they said they dont do an 11 speed for these and failed to say wether they will bring one out for them either , so not very helpful at all really.
  • Im sure theres someone out there who could clarify this ? A shop mechanic :?:
The tech guys at these company's are reluctant or sworn not give out such info i expect .

If this worked though , id shout loud & clear for all to see & hear
  • Any luck with this? i need to do the same.
  • Not yet but im pretty sure it will work.
I spoke to guy in a bike shop, he was selling zipp wheels with the 11 speed freehub , he said he cant see why it would'nt work as Zipp are the same company a Sram, ive researched the pretty much all the dimensions, bearings etc, andits all the same.
I will definately try it when a freeehub comes along a bit cheaper than the current retail price,
In the mean time i have purchased another set of 11 speed wheels to keep me riding, still got my Srams tho.

Assuming yours is the same as mine was (pics don't work at my end) then the hub looks identical to the equivalent Zipp generation hub so as long as the axle isn't different (i.e. narrow steel axle vs larger Alu axle or something like that) there's a very good chance it will work.

The time consuming part will be the job of the person redishing the wheel with the internal nipples etc (I rebuilt mine onto Bitex hubs when I got tired of the freehub drag sucking the chain up into the chainstay).

There was a guy on weightweenies who milled a 10sp freehub so that it accepted 11sp cassettes but he worked with CNC machinery as is day job so that's probably not realistic...

Try contacting Zipp. They may not want to give out such info, but then again they might. Worth a try.

Well , here's the moment when i (we) find out if this works or not?

Toady i recieved the zipp 11 speed freehub in the post ( waited for one to turn up on e-bay & my luck was in for a un-used one for £55.00.

So heres some pics of the change over -

Comparing the m side by side -

    P1070402.jpg
    P1070400.jpg
This is the 0.25mm washer which is on both freehubs and needed to stop the bearing touching.
    P1070404.jpg
    P1070405.jpg

Does it fit on the spindle -
    P1070406.jpg
    Yep..

And will it fit on the splines -
    P1070407.jpg
    P1070408.jpg
    Yep..
  • The other side , threaded locking cap -

    P1070412.jpg
    P1070413.jpg
    No problems so far -

Cassette & lock ring on -
    P1070414.jpg

& then onto the frame -
    P1070418.jpg
    P1070419.jpg
    P1070415.jpg

Alignment between the rear stays -
    P1070416.jpg
    P1070417.jpg

So there you go - A successful result :D

Ok, i have'nt hooked it up with a chain and tested it yet but , that is it .
The freehub fits and works just as i expected , the axle still fits with plent enough thread for the locking cap, the cassette is free for rubbing on the frame anywhere, and the rear wheel does not need re-dishing :D , if you want to get the vernier calipers or micrometers out then you may find it to be one sided slightly but for me this is just not an issue, the brake caliper can be set to accomodate it and so can the gears shifting .

So for those of you that have these wheels / hubs and want to upgrade form 10 speed to 11 speed then go for it .

Happy days , My Srams s30 Al race are now 11 speed . :D
  • Oh & also while im here , has anyone got 10 speed groupset for sale ?

    Preferably shimano 105 5700 or ultegra 6700 .

    LMK .

    Cheers , scooter .
  • Nicely done.

I have a set of these so its an interesting one for me. I am wondering whether similar might be possible with SRAM S60 /S80 hubs as I have two sets of those that going to 11spd on at some point would be good and similar to the S30s there is no official 11spd SHim/SRAM route. The hubs and freehubs are different to the S30s so no direct swap there.

Having had a look the hubs are identical to Zipp flashpoint ones, no 11spd option for those either. However, a bit more digging and it looks like the hubs use a "KT" freehub. Turns out the Reynolds also use them and they do do an 11spd freehub. It looks exactly the same as the 10spd in terms of seals etc as far as I can see. Bearings, certianly in trms of internal dimensions are the same. Wondering now if it's worth a speculative purchase to see if it works.
  • Hi,

Is this all still working well? I'm looking to do the same now I have an 11-speed bike on the way.
Was it the Zipp 188 freehub that you fitted?

    Cheers

Looking at the pics above, I'd say that wheel should be redished. It's been pushed over to the NDS because the new freehub is longer than the old one. If the NDS endcap is the same one as before, then the overall axle width will be a little longer than the spec 130mm as well, although this shouldn't be a disaster.

Hi , Yeah its the Zipp 188 freehub for 17mm axle. Im still running my 11 speed Novatech's & haven't swapped them over yet to try them out  , ive removed many of the pics from photo bucket now so lost the ones above.
The picture above which shows the wheel/tyre alignment between the stays is exaggerated by the camera not being dead centre.

Sure. I would measure the dropout-to-dropout width; I expect you'll find it's now somewhere around 131 to 131.5mm. If so, the wheel will need to come towards the DS by half the excess (so 0.5 to 0.75mm). On the 2012 Zipp 188 V7 for which one uses the full conversion kit with a replacement axle, the redishing required is considerably greater as the NDS endcap is shorter to keep the width nominal.
  • Hello.

I know this post is old, but I have a set of SRAM S80/S60, I want to make it 11 speed. Do you think if I buy the Zipp 10 to 11 speed 188 Hub conversion will work fine ? I love the wheelset it matches my bike and I would hate to see it go. What do you guys think ?
