Mixing Shimano 2300 levers with modern shimano calipers

I would like to upgrade the basic Tektro brakes from my 2010 Giant Defy 4. Is has STI 2300 levers and I am confused about which modern calipers will work fine with these. Someone told me that the 5700 calipers won't work but 5800 will, and now I am just confused! Any advice will be appreciated.
I don't want to spend a fortune (and am aware that Swissstop pads will make the world of difference so will add these after) so have been considering either R650's or 105 but don't want to have to replace the levers as well if I can help it.

Can't say it 100% certainly, but I can't see how they wouldn't work, the lever is basically pulling a cable that's tightening the caliper, should work fine IMO0
