Evening

Have been riding my gran fondo 2013 2.1 for 2 years, really pleased with it, changed tyres but that is about it. Was giving someone some advice re starting at 105 minimum tonight and showed him my spec below, one thing I noticed was that my rear cassette are tiagra, is it worth me upgrading?, any feedback appreciated,

Rear Derailleur:
Shimano 105, 10-speed
Number of Gears:
20
Shifters:
Shimano 105 STI shifter/brake combo, Flight Deck-compatible, 20-speed
Chainset:
Oval 730 forged alloy
Chainrings:
50/34T
Bottom Bracket:
Press-fit BB86 sealed bearing
Cassette:
Shimano Tiagra, 12-30T, 10-speed

No, at least not until your cassette needs replacing over time.

I run a Tiagra cassette on a pair of wheels I use with Ultegra 6700. You won't notice a difference.
  • I like shimano 105 very much , but some say , campagnolo centaur is very good for a similar price .
What do you think ?i never been on campa before is it that much better? I think is a bit lighter than the 105.

My RS11 winter wheels were bought today and I was going for an Ultegra 12-28 but the Tiagra was there in my LBS and I just thought that light weight isnt the point of winter wheels and Tiagra is cheap to replace.
As above, stick with it until it wears out and then upgrade if you want.
The Ultegra is only a few quid more than the 105 cassette too so Id go for that option but any 10 spd shimano will work nicely.

    Whatever butters your toast.

This is my advice too. Too many people on here automatically jump onto posts like this saying; "you won't notice a difference", or "run what you have until it wears out" like it's in-vogue.

If you want to upgrade then do so! It WILL save you some worthwhile weight for not a lot of money. In terms of weight saving, it's way cheaper than buying some carbon bars or fancy cranks. Do whatever you feel like doing.

I'd buy the Ultegra item instead of 5700 105 though. Only costs a small amount more and it's quite a fair bit lighter.

Upgrade if you can afford it. While you are at it if you feel fit enough you can change the ratio too if your rear derailleur can take it.

The question was whether it was worth upgrading. If you interpret that as "please validate my desire to upgrade" then fine. Doesn't make it any less pointless.

  • I changed from Tiagra 12-30 to Ultegra 12-30 seems crisper but not a massive difference.
