Rear Light ??

I just wondered what you guys use for a rear light on your road bike? and if you had a suggestion for me?

I have a saddle bag and the trouble is most lights would be better on the seat post etc, I have a water bottle storage which is great for my work commute but on longer rides I need the space for juice, so no good and it won't be long before the nights draw in, plus I thought just having a rear light on the go even during the day would not be a bad idea as sometimes it can get a little dark when your in the trees.

Ideally I'd like a rear light that fits on the saddle bag and nice and bright, ideally one that charges using the usb connection?? Any thoughts, Thanks guys

  • I use a Fizik saddle, and have the ICS Cateye that works OK.

Failing that, does your saddle bag have a loop for a light?

  • Have an exposure flare, which I use on rainy/grey days as it can be seen from a long way away.

My cycling pal has the same light and on call out duty was driving along and saw a flashing red light about a mile up the road, carried on driving to find him waiting for me turn up. A little costly but a very good light IMHO.
Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.

I have a cherry nite bomb which has served me for a couple of years in town on well lit streets. Mine isn't rechargeable however, the batteries last me months.

For out of town riding I have a Hope District which works brilliantly, albeit not well received in group rides unless I stay at the back.....

As already mentioned, get a seat bag with a light loop. I use the Altura small speed seatpack with a cateye Reflex automatic rear light, attached using a cateye belt clip, the light is high up and central for good rear view visibility.
  • hi,I have a moonshield 60 rear light which is very bright and usb rechargeable,it was the best I could find this time last year and is still working great, too bright at full power for night spins but great at full power during daytime.i recently bought the Lezyne micro drive rear light and its even brighter and seems well made amd has a max output of 70 lumen, either one o these will do the job, regards

Regardless of the light you put on the light clip on your saddlebag, put an elastic bag round the light and clip. A 1p elastic band can save you £££s in replacement lights.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

I have a smart half watt r2 lunar. I see they do them USB chargeable too but unless you ride a lot I'm not sure I'd bother.

I'd not ride with just one light at night though. You never know if something will happen to it. Get a cheap skulls led on your helmet or some bar end LEDs too.

I prefer a rear light with AAA batteries, to USB rechargeable because I can keep a couple of cheap spare AAAs in the saddle bag in case it runs out of juice and they take less space than a spare light and they dont lose their charge.
  • RSP Astrum. As bright as a Smart Lunar, but far more waterproof. Comes with a clip to go on a saddlebag loop.
