I've jsut bought a 2014 Cannondale Super Six Evo 105 5 which rolls on Shimano RS11 wheels.

I'd like to upgrade the wheels as quick as possibly as I've been told this is probably the most noticable upgrade and I should have a budget of up to £500 from the sale of my old bike.

I'm about 75kg and I ride about twice a week, I ride a few sportives and distances up to about 100 miles. It would be nice to have a set that will last me a little while too if I'm spending a bit of money!

The sets I've been lookng at are below, my faouvite of the lot are the Reynolds Stratus as I think they look the coolest!

318.00 Fulcrum Racing 3 Wheelset

369.99 Shimano RS81 C24 Carbon Laminate

449.00 American Classic 420 Aero 3

449.00 Reynolds Stratus Pro Rim Wheelset

Also, I know Mavic Ksyrium will be in budget but please understand the importance of sibling rivarly as my twin brother also has a Super Six and upgraded to Ksyrium so I'll get constant abuse for copying him on both wheels and bike if I buy them so they are sadly not a consideration!

Your advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Scott

I've found the C24's flex when out of the saddle though, I'm 80kgs. Funnily enough, that was on a Supersix that I was test riding.

The AC 420's are very good wheels and wind tunnel testing has proved they're as aero as most top end 50mm carbon rims. They apparently have a habit of chewing freewheel pawls. Spares should be available though. I had some for two years and never had this issue. In fact, I didn't have any issue with them at all. Nice wheels though the price has been creeping up…

Having put 13k miles on a set of Ksyrium Elites I would say they are a lovely wheel. Good in all conditions and types of riding. I never had a single issue with them. If I could have afforded it, I would have replaced like for like however cash was tight so I had to look at spending wisely and went down the hand built route.

I'm currently riding on these, with the Miche Primato hubs:

Malcolm has built me a lovely set of wheels that look totally understated but perform much better than their modest price tag would suggest. Very stiff and the hubs have been great so far. I would even say that I prefer them to the Elites….

  • Thanks, I could pehaps look at the Mavid Ksyrium then as it won't just be from advice off my brothers!

They do seem to be highly rated.

Lots of support for Campag Zondas if you are going down the factory built route. Available with Shimano 11 speed compatible freehub if that's the groupset you have on your Cannondale. And before anyone else chips in - there is no stigma attached to running Campag wheels on a Shimano equipped bike. In fact the Fulcrums are made by Campag

Have a read at this thread

Lots of positive comments on the Zondas (including from yours truly), I have now done around 300 miles on mine and they are fantastic wheels - my average has gone up between 1 and 1.5mph on most of my fitness routes compared to my previous wheelset.

I bought the Wiggle offer wheels at around £265 but on reflection I should probably have saved a bit harder and gone for the 2-way fit versions at £376

This gives you the option to run tubeless as well as standard clinchers. Seems going tubeless will be the next lowish cost upgrade to get excited about

  • The Zonda's look good value, and will put some change in my pocket for some tubeless tyers and perhaps a carbon seat post! Thanks for the recommendation.

I've also found these whilst looking on Merlin which look like good value for a top end set of wheels:

    £540 for a £1000 set of Fulcrum Racing Zero's

They seem to be only selling Campy though?

I'm personally in a similar situation, although my budget is lower at £400, I'm considering getting these. Although from what I have heard they aren't bomb proof, but for dry weather - and the odd bit of rain, they seem to be a good deal?!
