Swapping cassettes and indexing issues

I changed the cassette on a wheel the other day and expected the indexing to remain exactly as before, but I had to make some adjustments to the rear derailleur and to the cable tension to get it right. Transmission is 6700 by the way.

The hub is DA 7900. Cassette 1 is Tiagra 12-28. Cassette 2 is Ultegra 12-25. [For cassette 1, I could instead use an Ultegra 11-28 or 12-28 in theory but the Tiagra has uniquely good (in the Shimano range) climbing ratios (21-23-25-28) so I will always want to swap between these two cassettes.]

I also have two other pairs of wheels on two other bikes, (Shimano 105 5700 hubs) and may want to do some other cassette swapping in future. Is it common to have such indexing differences just by changing a cassette? I thought all Shimano 10 speed cassettes were interchangeable?

If I recall correctly there was a spacer involved but it went on in the same position on cassette 1 and 2, so that should not account for any difference.

I think I m right in this but Tiagra 10sp doesn't need a spacer but the Ultegra 10 sp will.

I have no issues swopping any shimano cassette on my DA 7850 wheels, rs20, fulcrum 1s and 5's & dt swiss 240s and don't need to re index at all.
  • Ah, I see, thanks for the advice, I'll try that out and do some measuring with a vernier to check. Cheers.
  • Are your wheels 10 or 11 speed? I recently tried to use a Tiagra cassette on my 11 speed wheels, but the 10/11 speed spacer hit the rivets on the Tiagra cassette, my other cassette (SRAM 10 speed) does not have these rivets and was fine, it turns out some 10/11 spaces have notches to avoid these rivets, mine did not.
