Just broken another set of glasses - these were £25 + Northwaves that just broke at the bridge. Less than a year old.

Anyway, should I spend more or less?

I've just has a look on ebay, they do them for £1.16 each shipped so I've popped four of them in my basket.

If I spend loads, they'll end up scratched in my back pocket right?

Ah decisions decisions..

I suppose pricier glasses are more scratch resistant?

Another one for salice 006, they are superb!
  • I've had some Oakley Half Jackets for about 18 months now and they're still as good as new. What with the rise of chip seal roads around my way, I've been hit directly in the lenses with small stones at least twice now and they still don't have a scratch. Buy some nice ones and take care of them (i.e. don't put them in your pocket).

Don't think I would ever put a pair of sunnies in my back pocket. If I didn't need them whilst out on a ride, I would put them on my helmet, by sticking the arms through couple of the vents or if that doesn't work (depending on what helmet/shade combo I'm rocking that day...), wear them on the back of my head.

I may still have some specialized ones that I no longer wear, they should be in good nick. PM your address and I'll send them to you.

I'll have a look for them over the w'end and confirm condition.

Bought a pair of cheap bolle tinted safety glasses from amazon, also sell them at screwfix, at 6-8 quid they have lasted me 2 years, a few minor scratches but no issues at all with them. Also i find them relatively comfortabl in comparison to more expensive pairs i have had in the past

Tried the sticking on the back of my head thing and lost a pair of Oakleys doing it !!

  • Another +1 for the Salice 006's, my first "proper" cycling glasses glad I opted for these over some Oakleys.

That said, if I could get some Oakleys for the same price I probably would, just because.

Tifosi photo chromics. I prefer them to my Oakleys. £60.

  • 006 here too. Massive lens so the frame doesn't get in the way.

  • As overpriced as Oakleys are, if you look after them, they can last years....decade even. Still got an original pair of M frames I love.

Bought some Salices last year also. Great eyewear, but I have noticed the lenses have picked up a few marks and I always keep them on my face or protected. The Oakley lenses do seem to (almost), justify their price tag
  • I scoffed at Oakleys for years as overhyped fashion rip offs - got my first pair about three months ago (long story) and wow they are good! I've worn prescripton glasses for 45 odd years and the Oakley optics are the best I have ever used. Believe the hype they are amazing and having tried them the price now makes sense.

No worries. I do have the glasses still. Worn but useable and I also have some others that may interest you. PM me if you're interested.

The lenses are in good condition with no signifant stratches.

Don't buy Oakleys on eBay, they will be fakes. Only buy them in a shop or from an authorised online outlet.

Sound advice I got mine from RxSport and they were fab to deal with.

This. Everyone in my cycling club has also jumped on the Bolle safety glasses band wagon. They've seen me through Malloca, Alps, and various other trips over the last few years. After two years they are a bit battered, but you know what, £6 gets me a new pair and another few years. You'd never know they weren't an expensive proper pair of cycling glasses from looking at them
  • I have used Bolle safety glasses for years - I have pairs with clear, contrast and dark lenses. They do a job and they are cheap. However...

I got a new job recently and I foolishly walked round Condor Cycles while still in the phase of being excited by the big pay rise - and I got myself a pair of photochromic Oakley Radarlock Path. They are quite clearly loads better than the Bolle glasses because...

    1. They are a lot more comfortable
    2. They don't fog up
    3. Water doesn't stay on the outside of the lens so they are a lot better in the rain (I used to take my Bolle glasses off)
    4. I don't seem to have as much of a problem with sweat running into my eyes (due to better air circulation??)
    5. They never slide down my nose due to the excellent nose bridge
    6. They look cool

....I may think of more things given time!

But..... I really don't think they are worth the extra if you haven't got the cash to splash. If you have though, they are absolutely superb.

+1 for RxSport and they sell a few other brands too.

I've got Flak Jackets and Radarlock. Both are fantastic, I use the FJs in the car now since I bought the Radarlocks to have a lens more suited to winter (and easier to change etc). The FJs are 5 or 6 years old, still got great optics and in good condition on the lens despite taking countless stones from the road.

Exactly the same for me - well not scoffed at them, but never thought they would be worth the cash.

Had some for a birthday present, and was blown away by the quality - since then, rumour has it, I may have accrued some additional 5 pairs (Including a prescription pair for driving from the excellent RX sport as already mentioned), and am currently looking at another pair now possibly........

They do the job great, really easy to change lenses over, not Oakley quality, but been using them past 2 months and they are superb. No fogging issues, fits nicely, stops things going in my eyes, and I can see clearly :-)

Forget to mention they call themselves Okley and the case it comes in is lovely with Oakley sign or should I say Okley, the case definetly is as good quality as Oakley.
