I'm just cleaning out my Stem/Forks and noticed the silver ring (headset crown) is cut (i.e. not a ring) - is this the way it is or do I need to replace it/the bearing?

thanks!

Quite a few headsets come with a split in the crown race to make it easier to fit over the steerer. Take a close look, and if it looks like a smooth, straight cut then it's probably meant to be like that; if it looks rough then it might be a non-split crown race that has cracked, and should be replaced.

Thanks - looks like a straight cut but I'm not too sure.

What do you think? Pic attached!

That is not the crown race. It is the top centering wedge.

    Have a read of parktools.

    +1

Compression ring. Goes on top of the headset under the upper dustcap.

Oh! And it's meant to be split so it can compress when pressure is applied to it from above.
