Zipp 404 crash damage

Unfortunately I was involved in a fairly large pile up in a sprint last week caused by a few riders touching wheels up ahead. I went down very hard fracturing my left wrist and possible pelvis fracture... Anyway, I am of course more worried about my wheels, as unlike my bones, carbon does not grow back! There doesn't appear to be any actual cracking, however there is a nasty scuff which has lead to a bit of flaking in the surface layers of carbon. Would love some opinions. Repairable? Write off? Death trap? Safe? I've included some pics below.

  • They look OK to me... are they tubulars? If they are tubulars, just sand off the scratched bits and they are ready to go, if they are clinchers, then contact someone who repairs carbon fibre and see what they say. Would not bother involving Zipp, they will obviously tell you need this and that and quote you 800 quid for a new rim fitted

Yes, they are tubular, thanks for the advice. It actually looks like someones chainring has dug into them!
  • Scratches... just sand them down to check if there is something sinister underneath... otherwise, treat them as they were posh wood, which is what carbon fibre is at the end of the day

As the damage is near the brake track, it's unlikely that carbon repair specialists would be prepared to help.

I have used the following to repair carbon rims quite successfully - rub down the damaged areas with emery paper, apply resin and then sand-down smooth with various grades of wet-dry until smooth.

Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • I hope you can repair them....I would have cried if that happened to me.
