Swapping between 11 speed wheels

Morning All,

When I swap between two set's of 11 speed wheels I find that the indexing of the RD seems to need adjusting.

It is set up for my main set of wheels but everytime I switch to a winter / training set the noise is unbearable. It's Di2 so I try to set it up on the move but I still can't seem to get it noise free on the second set which raises the question is something wrong? Has anyone else had this?

One of the main diffrences is that the training wheel are by design much quieter so I guess I hear more drivetrain noise but as it stands I can't just swap out the wheels without indexing and even them I am not happy with the noise it makes.

Are both sets of wheels the same brand / model ? if not then i think (i may be wrong) the hub and freehub positioning / dimensions wont be exactly the same as each other. If you re-adjust the high and low limit screws that should correct it. i think in Di2 micro adjust mode it moves in micrometers so its too small of a measurement to fix it.

No they are diffrent. I assumed they would be swap in and out so looks like I was wrong. I'll have to have a fettle to see what else I need to do to ensure smooth running for both sets if thats the case then. I've very fussy when it comes to noises as it drives me mad when I'm riding :)

    Cheers

The hub offset is different between the two wheels.

If one has nice&simple cup and cone bearings on a threaded axle, you should be able to adjust it so that more axle sticks out of one side of the hub, less out of the other
Or looking at it the other way the hub - and cassette - is moved slightly to the left/right relative to the frame and hence the gears align the same as your other wheel.
  • Thanks Andy. I will have a look at that as I've got one of the hubs stripped down anyway.
