Thinking about buying a full suspension bike but which is best.

Is it best for the suspension unit connected to the top tube or vertical to the bottom bracket?

At 56 I am not interested in hammering down hill, want a bike for riding in the Yorkshire dales and North York Moors

What sort money would a average bike cost

  • The placement of the suspension isn't that important to me.
One attached to the top tube makes it easier to adjust the suspension on-the-fly, but it isn't essential. I find that mine is always stuck in the same position until I need to ride home along the road.

If what you are riding isn't too technical, and is more focussed on cross-country rides across rolling moorland, I would go for short-travel 29er. The Giant Anthem X 29er has got a ton of good reviews, but you are looking at something close to £2K:

A friend has one and it eats up the miles on our rides around Northumberland.
(I'm not saying that it is the best out there, but it is a great bike for that particular type of riding.)

You will find that a 26" wheeled bike (especially a model 1 or 2 years old, can be picked up with good discounts).
I'm sure that other people will have alternative recommendations.

Where the shock is, is irrelevent. How well the suspension works is important.

    And go up from there.

  • You can have the shock in either position with good or bad results.
I have owned a Giant Anthem with 26" wheel and it's a superb bike for eating up miles. Pauls Cycles always have the heavily discounted. You should be able to get a good one for around £1500 or maybe a little less.
