Campag bearing failed already?!

Evening guys.

Well cleaning my bike tonight after a ride, and on spinning the front wheel of my Campag Scirocco wheel there is an almost rumble noise coming from the bear/hub, the wheel spins ok, but you can feel a notch/step when rotating the wheel gently.

Now the wheelset was new, and has cover no more than 450miles at best, a few wet rides, but nothing to major really.

I hope it's not a bearing failed?!

  • how tight is the quick release? people generally do them up too tight which puts extra load on the bearings.

take the wheel out of the frame and spin it, holding the axle, does it still feel rough?

I have the QR on at a nice but not tight setting.

My thoughts are, will running QR to loose affect the bearing tension?

I did check having the wheel in the fork and no QR on it spun better but not silent like a few days ago.

  • How do you clean your wheels? You may have forced some dirt into the bearings, I would take them apart and have a look.

The bike seldom gets wet, but it does get wiped down after every ride.

I haven't ridden through any gritty roads as such, only been caught in the wet twice since having the new wheels on.

I will have a check of the preload collar, as I see that can cause tightness? It's more the rumble that cause concern?

    Problem solved.

The preload adjuster had some how tightened up, possible the grease has worked itself down and more drag on the bearing?

    Anyways, happy again now.
