Stem/steerer interface

Hi All

A quick question from a newbie:

Ali steerer.
Kore carbon stem, one bolt design (big fat 6mm bolt in the middle of the stem.
Slammed stem set up on a road bike,

The ali steerer is a tad too short to give me (once the stem is in place) the perfect 5mm below the top lip of the stem gap - there is a good 10/15mm gap.

The steerer does, however, go a couple of mil over the top of the big bolt holding the stem on. There is then no problem with the preload bolt holding the top cap into the star nut.

Would you class this as safe - I am in two minds - one says yes, full clamping of the bolt onto the steerer with just a tad of the stem clamp nice and tight onto the ali stem with additional hold of the star nut, the other of my minds says its very iffy due to the large gap above the bolt and just under half of the stem not being clamped onto the steerer.

All comments very welcome.

Thank you

  • No it's not safe... I wouldn't ride it anyway.

Can you imagine it breaking when descending at 30mph+

Agreed, 10-15 mm is way too much, 5 mm max.
Might hold a wile, but is asking for trouble.....
