My wife tells me she would like a road bike, but only a cheap one ! So what would be the best option, a B'Twin 500 SE from Decathlon for £349 or a BeOne Jade Sport from Melin Cycles for £377

You input would be very welcome.

Best to buy the one she can try for size first.

Your wife probably thinks a cheap bike is the same as a slightly more expensive one so I would consider upping the budget if you are happy with that.

Are you near enough to Merlin to actually go to the shop?

t4tomo, swap !! you can have her..... :D

Carbonator, you're right she thinks a cheap bike is the same as a more expensive one ! I don't
think it will get much use so we don't want to spend too much. Merlin Cycles is just over
the hill, about 40 miles away so we'll pop over for a look.

    Its a difficult one.
If its really heavy and clunky she will be less likely to enjoy riding it, and she will only continue if she enjoys it.
Are you much taller than her?

Thought you were probably near Merlin. Guessing you could visit a Decathlon too.
Not sure why the second poster assumed you could not try the bike for size.

My wife has gone mad on road cycling recently. She wishes she had tried it years ago.
I am a bit worried she is keener than me now
Hope yours does enjoy it
  • Just a quick note, and it might not be relevant, but the smaller sizes in Decathlon Road bikes (48 and 51) come with smaller wheels than normal, ie 650 as opposed to 700.

My other half is contemplating coming over to the Dark Side, and likes the Decathlon range, but is somewhat put of by this.

Good point, my wife is only around 5'3" but I have read an article on the Cervelo website
on 650 vs 700 wheels and it's very interesting !

I think for the small person, 5'5" and under 650 is the way to go.
