Kielder Forest - Lakeside Way

Anyone with experience of Kielder Forest - Lakeside Way?
I'm trying to work out if the route is suitable for a road bike with slicks? I know it's a gravel bridleway and have already been told that a cx/mountain bike would be best but don't have access to either.
I have an old pair of 28c Gatorskins that still have some life in them which I'd use, but aside from the gravel cutting the tyre's would I be at risk of damaging wheels? My wheels (Mavic Cosmic Ellite) are only 9 months old and really don't want to spoil them as I'm not in a position to replace like for like.

You would get by, but if if you dont want to mark anything I wouldnt. I normally ride it on my mountain bike.0

Cheers for that.
Not really bothered about stone chips or anything like that, just didn't want to risk destroying a wheel. But thinking about it there shouldn't be more risk than roads.
Another option I'm considering is buying some new tyres. Can anyone point me in the direction of a 700/23 nobly/touring tyre? If they exist. Clearance is quite tight so thinking 23c would be max I could get away with.0 -
I don't think you're going to find a 23mm knobbly / touring tyre!0
