does anyone know when it will be possible to buy these wheels ? - all the reviews sound great - and everything the outgoing Shamals had plus less weight and even better breaking - cant think of a better climbing wheel

It says 1426g on the link above, so 1g heavier... but scrap that, same weight. Probably will cost a load more than a set of regular Shamal Ultras, braking will not be loads better on these Milles (and who'd need it to be?!). Also, get grit in the pads and it will score that braking surface and spoil the look.

Shamal Ultras are good wheels yes, Dark Label looks discrete too. From the Campag stable though some Bora One 35's are way lighter (1250g?), have an aero advantage, and can be for under a grand. Of course you'd be running Tubs, but if you're okay with that then they might be worth considering.

Mfin: I have tub on the Boras I already have, but for all the weight they save I add it carrying a spare tyre !!! and I am on roads prone to wire punctures - so by the time you add gloop in the tyres it would negate the benefit - The Bora 35's are lovely, but without a support car, as non-starter..... if you have ever tried changing a tyre in 35 deg, you will know its not something you want to do often

  • Not a big fan of the Shamals. I've just finished comparing a dozen wheels for climbing (and descending). I prefer the Dura Ace C35 CL for a number of reasons. And if you want a set that won't easily flat in all the mucking around it sounds like you're getting ready to do, you might consider the HED Ardennes Plus CL or Easton EA90 SLX (run both of them tubeless). I find they ride more comfortably than the Campags, are just as light, have wider rims, etc.

Fair comment. I own Shamal Ultras by the way, and they are fantastic there's no doubt about that. The closest wheel I had to compare to factory-wise was DuraAce C24, the Shamals are a more comfortable wheel to ride, absolutely no doubt. I sold the DuraAce cheap to a friend and rode his bike before and after fitting them too, same thing on his bike, too much road buzz appeared from nowhere.

I'm just not convinced by the Mille, I can't see what it really offers apart from a braking surface that I think would get scored by grit and it would be disappointing when it happens as far as looks go. They also seem like they will be far more expensive for no real world difference but that of their look? I could be wrong, I don't know too much about them. Shamal Ultras are £600 on the street.

Of course, money isn't everything to some people, so that part of it might be irrelevant. If it was me, even at the same price, I think I'd go with the originals still. Each to their own though isn't it!
