It does seem like there are too many types of riding for just one bike!

Sniff... this has made me feel all nostalgic. I've been commuting by bicycle for over 2 years now, and it really has changed my life. I'm now don't smoke, am a fair bit lighter, healthier and poorer

After a while off bikes getting back in the saddle seemed too hard - especially as I work in Crystal Palace which is at the top of a hill. That hill really did seem impossible 3 years ago..

I'd already been commuting for a little while when I started using Strava, but FWIW here is one of my first recorded rides

And here is yesterdays ride home :D

That is a distance!!! - when I started the looks of incomprehension that I got over cycling 20 miles to work were very off-putting. The most common follow up question was "how do you get home?"

    "how do you get home?"

    Classic!

I would laugh but I find its sad that people don't realise what their bodies are capable of.
  • After a day working here I am not sure it is my body that has given in or my willingness to live... but my 7 and a bit mile ride home is often very hard for me to manage. Either way I would seriously never start trying to commute if it was 20+ miles each way. Hat's off to you for starting the commute at that distance. I'm happy with my 7 mile and 15-16mph potter to and from home.

    Duplicate post.

Why is BR playing up so much for me lately?

only yesterday as I dismounted I ran into my new neighbour who asked me where I work... when I answered Canary Wharf she asked and where do you cycle to... errr Canary Wharf.

I definitely feel it by the end of the week and have to keep an eye on fuelling but it is more or less flat so as you suggest anybody could do it.

Everyone at work know I cycle to work. The bike behind my desk is a give away. They all looked shocked when I tell them I live 13 miles away. Anyway yesterday I cycle to our office in Leyton, getting lost on the way in the Olympic park meant I cycled 24miles to work I still arrived quicker than I would have done be public transport. Anyway I arrived sweaty in full lycra and on a bike, first question "you didn't cycle here did you?" <facepalm>

Last week I had a level 2 (on road) training session with a nearly 50 year old, quite overweight woman. She cycled from Edmonton to Southwark (using an eBike) pretty much every day and she said it saved her at least half an hour each way, compared to PT.
12 miles across London in rush hour is no joke, so fair play to her.

She aims to reduce her reliance on electrical assistance over time and use a normal bike at weekends for fun and fitness. Its the start of a long road, but doable.
