I like the design, nice and neat, but does it keep mud off your back?

Plenty of people use that style on the rear but mainly to keep the shite of their shock.
On a hard tail you'd be better off with one that mounts to the seat or seat tube:

Mudhugger is one of the best iv found on the rear they also works well with a full sus frame.
