roof bar help

i am looking to get roof bars for my golf. i don't really know what i am doing! and don't want to ask blind in halfords incase i get the store numpty! i want roof bars for my bike rather then ones mounted at back as we would also use a roof box at times when we go away. little help would be nice to point me in the right direction. cheers

Are you just after the roof rack or do you want the bike carrier too?

If you want a carrier - I can recommend the Thule 591 ProRide. ideally you want roof bars with a T-track which avoid the need for a clamp on the rails as the bolt ('T') head slides along the inside of the rail.

Is it a hatchback or estate with rails? If it had rails ypu will only need the bars and a carrier, of hatchback then you will first need the relevant foot pack to attach to the car.

I find roofbox.co.uk pretty good and you can select your car and it will bring up what you need. I've got Thule aero bars with the T track and a couple of thule carriers and no complaints. Had the square bars on my previous car and found them a bit more faff.

its hatchback. i probably want the roof rack too now, i can maybe get a box for next summer. i will look on roof box think i have heard of them before.

Just bought the Thule Wingbars with the T track fittings which I'd definitely recommend for ease of use and Confidence in use.

I bought two Thule Proride 591's and a couple of Thule 532 cheaper bike carriers as the 591's were too big to get 4 on my roof.

You can buy cheaper than Thule and it will work just as well but my rationale was if and when I change cars and want to offload it on eBay, it will sell for a much better price as everyone is brand obsessed.

Make sure you shop around to get the best price and also make sure you take advantage of Thules lock matching service to ensure you have a single key for everything.

Roofbox Company are really good but not always the cheapest as they say they are not allowed to discount Thule. There are a number of eBay sellers- all big firms, e.g. Ford Direct who sell at great prices. I bought my kit from three different places and saved about 30%

Definitely use the Roofbox company. You just enter the details of what car you have and they'll give you a list of the available options.

I also bought the Thule 561 as I think the Fork mount racks are far more secure. I cringe (probably without reason) when I see upright bikes waggling away in the wind on car roofs.

Another vote for roofbox.co.uk - the info from the website is excellent. They will also typically propose good on a budget through good value to a bit pricey but this really is good products.
